There isn’t a set period of time for replacing fire extinguishers because they exist in a variety of sizes, compositions, and extinguishing chemicals. A yearly inspection is the best way to ensure that your extinguishers are still functional. The cylinders can then be kept in use for decades by having internal inspections, pressure testing, and recharge services performed on them.

However, if you ever find issues during an inspection, such as a rusted or corroded cylinder, missing or broken components, erroneous gauge readings, or a missing inspection label, you should replace your fire extinguishers. A cylinder that fails a pressure test is one that should be discarded and replaced with a fresh one.
