It depends, is the final answer to the question “How many fire extinguishers does my building need?”
The following factors determine the fire extinguisher requirements:
Size and design of the space: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that fire extinguishers be placed accessible and no more than 75 feet apart. So it stands to reason that the required number will be determined by the building’s layout and total square footage.
Public buildings are evaluated and awarded one of four fire hazard levels: light, ordinary, extra, and commercial kitchens, depending on their use and what they contain. Existence of hazardous liquids: In accordance with OSHA regulations, if flammable liquids or gas are maintained in volumes of 5 gallons or more, a fire extinguisher with a minimum rating of 10B must be kept within 50 feet of the container.
Stairwells: A minimum of one fire extinguisher needs to be positioned next to the stairwell in multistory buildings.
